Average Weekly Turnover at DSE Falls by 18 Percent

After two weeks of downturn, all indices at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) — the country’s principal bourse — recorded a modest rise during the trading week of 19–23 October. However, despite the index recovery, most shares and units continued to lose value, and the average weekly turnover fell by over 18 percent.

Interestingly, market capitalisation at the DSE increased by over Tk 6,000 crore during the same period.

 

An analysis of market data shows that all three major indices gained ground over the week.

Despite the index gains, trading activity remained subdued.

  • Total turnover for the week stood at Tk 2,138.71 crore, down from Tk 2,611.11 crore in the previous week — a decline of Tk 472.40 crore.
  • Average daily turnover dropped by Tk 94.48 crore or 18.09%, standing at Tk 427.74 crore per day, compared to Tk 522.22 crore the previous week.

During the week, 392 companies and mutual fund units were traded at the DSE.

  • Prices rose for 157 companies,
  • Declined for 203,
  • And remained unchanged for 32.

 

Market capitalisation at the DSE rose by 0.87%, equivalent to Tk 6,058 crore.

  • At the end of the week, total market capitalisation reached Tk 7,05,343 crore,
  • Compared to Tk 6,99,285 crore the week before.

 

In contrast, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) exhibited a mixed performance.

Weekly turnover at the CSE stood at Tk 67.60 crore, compared to Tk 69.84 crore in the previous week — a decline of Tk 2.24 crore.

A total of 310 companies traded on the CSE during the week:

  • 97 gained,
  • 191 declined,
  • 22 remained unchanged.
